- A project by a Machiya architect - ![]() Andrew Namhias is a Cornell-educated architect working to preserve machiya around Kyoto. A mainstay of historical Kyoto, the machiya, is gradually disappearing from Kyoto's streets, but you can help reverse this trend! Join Andrew in a half-day workshop at a machiya nearby and learn about the machiya preservation process while working hands-on with materials such as plaster and bengara with drinks and food provided afterwards at Café Frosch. The Machiya Revival series is a collection of monthly events ranging from lectures, tours, to hands on experiences helping restore Kyoto machiya.
The first in the series is a hands on workshop at a 100 year old Machiya residence under repair. The upcoming workshop involves the following activities (subject to change): - Plaster patching of walls - Restoring washitsu ceiling (Japanese tatami room) - Repairing okudosan (an old fashioned stove) 12:30 - 19:00 - Reservation required - limited to 12 people Friday, 30 March
